Beeston Men’s hockey team have been crowned Premier League Champions after winning the play off finals this weekend.

They beat Surbiton 5-1 in the final yesterday with goals from Martin Jones, Ollie Willars, Craig Boyne(2) and Simon Egerton.

Beeston finished 11 points clear in the Premier League – qualifying easily for the Finals Weekend which features the top four teams in the country. Their semi final on Saturday against Reading finished 2-2 at full time with Beeston eventually winning a tense game 4-3 on penalty flicks.

After topping the league table this was our game to lose coming into today but this was a great result and it gives us a lot of pleasure.

Surbiton have been the in-form team since Christmas so we knew it would be tough today. But we played well and it’s great to come through with victory and take the title.

The Beeston fans have been fantastic and it’s so good to have so many of them down here this weekend.

As well as the Champions Trophy, Beeston were presented with a cheque for £2,500. Their captain Adam Dixon was named NOW Pensions Player of the Season.

Elsewhere there was disappointment for the club. Beeston’s U-18 boys lost 3-2 to Old Loughtonians in the final of the National Cup and the U-16s girls lost their final to Wakefield 7-6 on penalty flicks. The game finished 0-0 at full time.

Cannock U-18 boys finished third in the National Finals.
