Unemployment up 7% in the West Midlands

Unemployment in the West Midlands increased by 16,000 in the three months to March, official figures have revealed.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that a total of 253,000 people were unemployed in the region between January and March.

The region's unemployment rate was 9.2 per cent – a rise of 6.8 per cent during the period. It is the third quarterly increase in a row in the jobless total.

However, unemployment in the East Midlands remained unchanged in the three months to March.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that a total of 177,000 people were unemployed in the region between January and March.
