ITV News Central wins big at ITV awards

Our very own Andy Bevan won 'Journalist of the year' at the ITV Awards Photo: Seeing Eye

ITV News Central came away with more awards than any other ITV region in the ITV Regions and Nations News Awards held at the British Film Institute in London.

We won Gold for:

  • Best Digital News Team - for the way we cover this site
  • Journalist of the year - Andy Bevan - from a portfolio that included the murder trial in Florida of two friends from the Midlands, the 40th anniversary of Spaghetti junction and a man's 30 year project to build a scale model of the Odeon cinema
  • Specialist correspondent of the year - Peter Bearne - for the quality and range of his work as our education specialist
  • Production craft award - Ray Lehky for his technical excellence as an editor
  • Special feature - Andy Bevan for 40th anniversary of Spaghetti junction
  • Newsroom hero - Phil Youngson for his behind the scenes work in getting the best pictures to air

We won Silver for:

  • Curator of the year - Chris Halpin for his work on this site
  • Digital coverage - for this site on 28th June 2012, scene of widespread flash flooding in the Midlands and also the Torch Relay in Nottinghamshire
  • Interactivity award - for getting our viewers to email video of their reaction to stories we cover
  • Technical contribution - Ewhen Kurlak for work on our live satellite truck

We won Bronze for:

  • Image of the year - a "miraculous escape" picture of a man walking away after being thrown through his sunroof
