Children in Birmingham to be taught how to cook the Balti in schools

The Birmingham Balti will be put on the curriculum in schools throughout the city as part of a new initiative to teach children 'real-world skills'.

Here's a recipe on how to make an authentic balti.

Ingredients

  • Vegetable oil
  • 2 chopped tomatoes
  • 1 small finely chopped onion
  • 1 diced chicken breast deboned
  • 1 teaspoon of garam masala
  • 1 tablespoon of ginger and garlic puree
  • Pinch of fenugreek
  • Pinch of paprika
  • Pinch of turmeric
  • Pinch of cumin
  • 2 small green chillies chopped
  • Freshly chopped coriander

Method

  • Heat vegetable oil in pan until sizzling
  • Add chopped tomatoes and onions and cook until the onions are translucent
  • Add diced chicken breast
  • As chicken is cooking add in the following whilst stirring: garam masala, chillies, ginger and garlic puree, fenugreek, paprika, turmeric and cumin
  • Add water by the tablespoon whilst cooking as required and before serving ensure that the chicken is properly cooked through
  • Sprinkle with freshly chopped coriander and serve
