Out-of-hours GPs experiencing "unprecedented demand"

Demand for out-of-hours GP services in Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin is currently experiencing "unprecedented demand", according to healthcare bosses.

Shropdoc received calls from more than 600 people in the last 24 hours which is more calls than they would normally receive over an entire weekend.

"Shropdoc are dealing with the calls but they are triaging them - quite rightly dealing with the most urgent first. People who have heavy colds are also best getting over the counter remedies from their local pharmacy - there is nothing more effective that a GP can prescribe for a cold.”

– Dr Caron Morton, Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group

Meanwhile Heart of England NHS Trust, which runs Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham, told ITV News Central that A&E is extremely busy and staff are appealing for people to consider alternatives to A&E.

The advice is to call NHS 111 if you are need medical help or advice is the situation is not life threatening.
