Hundreds expected at Glenfield children's heart unit march

Protestors will march through Leicester today over proposals to stop children's heart services at Glenfield Hospital.

NHS England proposals could mean that children's heart surgery is no longer carried out at the hospital, meaning that patients in the East Midlands would need to travel further afield for operations.

It's not the first time demonstrators have taken to the street to voice their support for the unit - last month than a hundred people marched through Leicester to protest against the planned closure.

NHS England insists that the proposed changes are about upholding standards rather than making savings.

The NHS does need finally to implement the service standards recommended by leading cardiac surgeons and patients groups, which mean that not every hospital can meet the highest requirements.

The proposed changes are about maintaining the highest clinical standards possible for children and have nothing at all to do with cost saving.
