A teacher from Derby has won the teaching profession's equivalent of an Oscar at a prestigious awards ceremony in London.

Michelle Garton was named Primary School Teacher of the Year at the Pearson Teaching Awards. Michelle teaches at Wyndham Primary Academy in Alvaston. Pupils, parents and colleagues nominated her for the honour.

The awards organisers said:

Michelle is an outstanding teacher, leader and inspiration for children. She uses immersive and creative teaching tactics, ensuring all children have the tools to fulfil their potential and be the very best they can be, helping the school to achieve remarkable results.

The ceremony was told Michelle inspires her pupils by arranging class visits such as a trip to Toyota Derby to get them interested in STEM projects, and a tour of the Burton Mail newspaper offices to introduce them to journalism.
