A woman was attacked by a highland cow after a dog had been off its lead in the herd's field.

She was airlifted to hospital after suffering facial and kick injuries - and it appears the dog wasn't hers.

A police spokesman said the incident happened in the Bamford Edge area, Hope Valley, Derbyshire, at about 1pm yesterday.

He said the woman was helped by East Midlands Ambulance Service and mountain rescue and is thought to have been taken to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.

The Derbyshire Rural Crime Team said:

Another day, another incident involving a dog worrying livestock. On this occasion, it appears a dog off the lead has worried a small herd of highland cattle resulting in the cattle attacking a member of the public who was walking with another group, not related to the owner of the dog.

Due to the nature of the incident, a large number of resources were deployed, paramedics, air ambulance, mountain rescue and the police. The member of the public was airlifted to hospital due to the nature of their injuries.

Owners need to take responsibility for their animals and ensure they are under proper control at all times. This incident could have been avoided.
