Military vehicles were used to block roads in Lincoln for the Christmas lights switch on event this weekend and armed officers will also patrol this year's Lincoln Christmas market - an event that last year attracted 260 thousand people to the city.

Asst Ch Con Shaun West said:

"Visitors will expect to see police officers in an armed policing posture, very much what they will have see as and when we went from severe to critical following Manchester and following Parson's Green."

"We've got the hostile vehicle barriers around the market that prevents unnecessary vehicle access, whether that's hostile or just because we've got lots of pedestrians, they're multi purpose in that respect. This is the nature of running events these days, this is sensible good practice in event management."

Lincolnshire police have assured residents the county is safe - and they say the action they're taking is standard and happening nationally.
