Residents have complained that you ‘wouldn’t even know it’s Christmas’ in one Nottingham high street, because of the lack of festive lighting.

Nottingham City Council have promised to put up more lights in Clifton next week after residents complained about the current offering.

Some described what is currently on show as “pathetic” and pointed out that displays in nearby areas were much more impressive.

Paul Bailey, 62, a semi-retired plumber who lives on Bridgnorth Street, Nottinghamshire, said:

“The lights are pathetic, In Ruddington there are Christmas trees in every shop, they have all got nice lights and we do not have anything. There’s a big tree but it’s a bit tucked away, It is about time they did something about it.

You wouldn’t even know it’s Christmas when you walk along the main street. It looks like they couldn’t be bothered.

I would like to see more to make it cheerful around here, Southchurch Drive is the main shopping area, I’m sure all the market traders would like more to attract people.

Clifton often gets forgotten. I understand that in the past years there has been work on the road but all that’s done now and we still have no lights.”

Paul Jukes, 45, of Clifton, added:

"There's no Christmas spirit, I don't think they've really bothered this year. It's just disappointing, especially for the young kids."

– Paul Jukes.

Maria Watson agreed, the 47-year-old of Clifton resident, said:

“There’s not much apart from the big tree where Iceland is, those lights are nice but the whole estate could do with something, it is not Christmasy enough. Ruddington is lovely and we are so close to it, you come in to Clifton from there and it is not even Christmas time here. It is bleak every year, Clifton is forgotten about and it needs lights desperately. If the council are going to put up more, that is fantastic."

There are some decorations already but the council has responded to the concerns, also expressed by local councillors, and will be putting up more lights around the area.

Councillor Graham Chapman, portfolio holder for resources and neighbourhood regeneration, said:

“We want all our neighbourhoods to look festive this time of year, so thank you to the residents of Clifton for bringing this to our attention, plus local Clifton councillors are already on the case.

There are some decorations on Southchurch Drive, but we will be installing more next week.”
