Police officer stabbed in Birmingham

A police officer has been stabbed in Birmingham.

It happened in Wood End Road in Erdington this afternoon.

West Midlands Police say the 26-year-old neighbourhood officer had been deployed along with his team as part of a pre-planned arrest attempt.

The officer was stabbed twice in his neck and chest. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening and he has been taken to hospital.

A 48-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of two counts of GBH.

This incident highlights once again the dangers officers face every single day, as they put themselves in harm’s way to deal with dangerous situations.

The very nature of the job means officers go into challenging situations and acknowledge the risks they face. Despite this, officers put themselves on the front line protecting our communities from harm.

The officer’s family have been informed and will be supported by our wider police family. Nothing can prepare family members for this type of incident and our thoughts are with them.

We’d like to thank the public for their cooperation and patience as the cordon caused added travel disruption in the area.
