A man who was detained after a police officer was stabbed has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

The police constable was stabbed in the neck and chest during an attempted arrest at 5pm on Tuesday (12 December).

A 48-year-old man was arrested at an address in Wood End Road in Erdington, Birmingham.

The 36-year-old officer, who works with a Neighbourhood Taskforce Unit, has made 'good progress' in hospital having undergone surgery.

Our investigation into the stabbing – and the original matter the suspect was wanted in connection with – will both continue while he is being assessed.

This was a savage attack on a police officer in the line of duty…we will do all we can to ensure the offender is brought to justice.

– West Midlands Police, Detective Inspector Vanessa Eyles

Officers had moved in to arrest the man following allegations he’d left a neighbour with a broken collarbone and facial injuries during an assault.

I am so pleased to report our officer is recovering well in hospital following surgery. It is still early days, but the messages of support to him and his family have made a huge difference.

Our officers’ welfare is an absolute priority and I am proud of the colleagues who rushed to his aid and the support teams who brought this incident to a safe conclusion.

– West Midlands Police, Chief Superintendent Kenny Bell

The suspect has been taken to a secure hospital facility where he will be assessed by mental health professionals before a decision is made on whether he is fit to go through the criminal justice process.
