"Big things are happening in Brum": Poet pushes for Channel 4 relocation

A poet from Birmingham is celebrating the city as part of a drive to bring new industries and businesses to the area.

It comes as the future location of Channel 4 is set to be decided in the next few weeks.

The government has asked the broadcaster to consider moving out of London to ensure that it is more representative of the country as a whole.

A number of regions have submitted proposals including the West Midlands.

Poet Adaya Henry believes the region has an array of talent to offer:

Coming from the Midlands, we haven't had the same amount of opportunities as somewhere like London, especially in the creative and media industries.

So what we have to offer is all the groundwork because we've done it all.

We've been creating the projects, and writing our own thing, networking, making connections ourselves.

So I feel like Channel 4 could come here and have a break because all the work has been done.

A number of places have been put forward as possible locations for Channel 4 to move to. They include:

  • Belfast
  • Bristol
  • Cardiff
  • Glasgow
  • Hull
  • Leeds
  • Liverpool
  • Greater Manchester
  • Nottingham
  • Plymouth
  • Sheffield
  • Stafford
  • Stoke
  • York

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport said in a summary of the responses:

Some who responded advocated a wholesale relocation, while others proposed more partial moves.

Several respondents proposed that, rather than a relocation to a single location, Channel 4 should establish multiple bases (with commissioners) around the regions and nations.
