Goalkeeper back playing professional football just three months after cancer diagnosis

Birmingham City Ladies' goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger is back playing professional football, just three months after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

The 27-year-old had an operation in December. She returned to Birmingham City Ladies just eight weeks after the surgery.

She has since slotted back into the first team and is nearing the fitness levels from before her diagnosis.

Ann-Katrin Berger said her focus was always to return to football:

I feel really great, and I feel like it's like a new, not a new life, would be too much but it's just a nice feeling to come back.

I'm really grateful to be playing again.

Marc Skinner, Birmingham City Ladies Manager, says he sees Ann-Katrin as a heroine:

I wouldn't describe her any less than a heroine.

She really is that kind of stature in my eyes, somebody that has that ability, it's a mental resilience that she has that she was always going to come back as quickly as possible.

I remember the first meeting we had in a room over there when we first found out the news and she went I'll be back, I'll be back quickly.
