- Keith Wilkinson's video report from June 18th 2015
On this day in 2015, plans were unveiled for a major development to transform Birmingham city centre.
The Paradise development was intended to modernise the area around the controversial old library.
- What do the plans involve?
Originally called Paradise Circus, the Paradise development occupies a 1.8 million square foot area, combining commercial buildings, with retail, leisure and a planned 4* hotel.
As part of the plans, the existing Chamberlain Square will be renovated. There will be three new public squares and new pedestrian streets.
The final phase of construction is due to be complete by 2025.
- How are the works going?
The first phase of the Paradise development was complete in December 2018.
There was a significant setback when the construction firm Carillion collapsed in January 2018, forcing work to stop on the One Chamberlain Square building.
In March, it was announced that BAM Construction was appointed as the new main contractor, and work resumed on the site.
