West Midlands Police say a 19-month-old boy who was hit by a van on parkland near a travellers' site in Birmingham has died in hospital.

It’s understood the van collided with the infant just before midday yesterday at Sarehole Mill off Wake Green Road in Billesley.

The boy was taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital with a critical head injury.

A man aged 30 and a 26-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury through dangerous driving and are currently in police custody.

This morning more than a dozen mobile homes and caravans were on the parkland behind Sarehole Mill.

It's not clear whether those involved are from the travelling community.

Inspector Steve Radford from West Midlands Police’s Collision Investigation Unit (CIU), said:

“The tragic death of such a young child is deeply saddening. I’m keen to hear from anyone who was in Wake Green Road or the immediate vicinity and may have witnessed the collision or heard anything that may assist our investigation.”
