Hospital ward car brings smiles to young patients

The Queen's Hospital in Burton-on-Trent has introduced a new set of wheels on their wards, to help children feel calm before surgery. Younger patients can now get behind the wheel and drive themselves into theatres ahead of operations, in a bid to try and distract them from any fear or nerves.

Former patient Zander is all smiles in the video driving himself around the ward at the hospital. Staff at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust say children love it.

"Having an operation can be a scary experience so we purchased this car, from donations, to make the journey to theatre a little more exciting.

Often patients are anxious and the car immediately makes patients smile. The children love it, especially the loud horn and disco lights.”

– Caroline Dodd, Senior Sister, Children’s Department at Queen’s Hospital, Burton

Staff at the hospital are now appealing for children to think of a name for the ward car. Got any ideas ? They'd love to hear from you !
