Former Stratford MP John Maples has died at the age of 69. His death was announced by the Speaker in the House of Commons this afternoon.

The Prime Minister David Cameron has paid tribute to Lord John Maples, who has died at the age of 69.

Lord Maples was the former Conservative MP for Stratford-upon-Avon. He stood down as an MP in 2010 and became a Lord.

A loyal and determined Conservative, John played a key role as my deputy chairman for candidates prior to the last election.

He will be hugely missed by his many friends and colleagues from both within the Conservative Party and from across the political divide. He was widely respected, and a mentor to many of those he helped realise their own ambition of public service.

Tributes to Lord Maples

Tributes have been paid to Lord Maples, the former MP for Stratford Upon Avon, who has died from cancer at the age of 69.

A former deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, he served as Shadow Health Secretary, Shadow Defence Secretary and then Shadow Foreign Secretary under William Hague.

He was widely rumoured to have been one of the 'plotters' against Iain Duncan Smith when he became Tory leader but he always denied this was the case.

John Maples was first elected as an MP back in 1983 for the London seat of Lewisham West. He served there until 1992.

A one time barrister and businessman he had served under John Major as Economic Secretary to the Treasury.

He became MP for the Midlands seat of Stratford Upon Avon in 1997 and was re-elected in 2001 and 2005.

He stood down in 2010 and entered the House of Lords.

He was married with two children.

John Maples, former MP for Stratford, has died at the age of 69. His death was announced by the Speaker in the House of Commons this afternoon.

Mr Maples, who was also a former deputy chairman of the Conservative party and Shadow Foreign secretary, was elected in 1997 as MP for Stratford.

He previously served as MP for the London seat of Lewisham West.

By profession he was a lawyer and businessman and at one time served as Chairman and Chief Executive of Saatchi and Saatchi Government Communications worldwide.
