The Wellingborough MP Peter Bone has said he's optimistic that new Justice Secretary Chris Grayling may be persuaded to keep Wellingborough prison open.
Currently the prison is earmarked for closure, a move which could mean the loss of around 600 jobs in the town.
Mr Bone says Chris Grayling has promised to visit the prison and reassess the situation.
Wellingborough MP Peter Bone has criticised the decision to close HMP Wellingborough.
The Conservative MP told Parliament the closure of the prison in his constituency could mean the loss of up to 600 jobs. He described it as a "good improving prison" and said it was becoming more cost effective.
Wellingborough Prison will close by the end of this year with the loss of almost 600 prison places.
The Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke said closing the category C jail in Northamptonshire will save £10million per year.
