It's Been A Gas For 200 Years

This year is the 200th anniversary of Britain's gas industry - and the 45th anniversary of the conversion to natural gas, which started in Burton-on-Trent.

45 years of natural gas

This year marks 200th anniversary of Britain's gas industry.

It's also the 45th anniversary of a landmark date that put a town in Staffordshire at the centre of a gas revolution.

Burton upon Trent is best-known for its brewing heritage, but it was also the first place to convert to natural gas rather than using gas manufactured from coal.

For the first time, many people could enjoy gas central heating and constant hot water.

And the government put out a lengthy and informative information film about how people in Burton were dealing with the change.
