Police say they worked closely with prison to capture escaped prisoner

A man who absconded from an open prison in Lincolnshire has been living in Wolverhampton for four months claiming Jobseekers' Allowance.

Brendan Ryan had been serving time at North Sea Camp open prison for arson and threatening to kill a woman. He absconded in December last year and was not detained until April.

"Lincolnshire Police worked closely with HMP North Sea Camp to locate and recapture Brendan Ryan. All known addresses linked to him were checked and enquiries were made with West Midlands Police and other forces and agencies. Comprehensive intelligence logs were submitted in relation to his background information at the prison and the possible reasons for him absconding or potential whereabouts. Lincolnshire officers made contact with key people who were linked with him.

– Lincolnshire Police spokesperson

"The policy for dealing with absconders is that we work with the prison to decide on appropriate action/publicity according to each individual case/circumstance. The Prison/Home Office press office will tend to lead in terms of media and publicity for absconders. Other forces including West Midlands Police were contacted as part of the efforts to locate him."
