A Coroner has ruled that former Leicestershire Police Inspector Toby Day unlawfully killed his wife Samantha and their six-year-old daughter Genevieve before killing himself at their family home in Robin Crescent, Melton Mowbray.
The attack took place just days after Mr Day was sacked from Leicestershire Police for misconduct.
The couple's surviving children were also injured in the attack, fourteen-year-old Adam, and sixteen-year-old Kimberley, spending ten days in hospital.
