West Midlands Police have said its nine Springer spaniel puppies, who were born last month, are already demonstrating the inquisitive nature that'll help keep the region's streets safer.

By the time the puppies - three boys and six girls - reach their second birthday they'll be transformed into search specialists.

The puppies are called Odem, Orville, Osca, Oreo, Olivia, Olympia, Oriel, Oasis and Oxo.

Terry Arnett, Breed Scheme Manager, said: "It’s incredible how quickly they develop: for the first 10 days they can’t see and are totally dependent on their mum. But just a couple of weeks later they’ve pretty much trebled in size and are developing their own little personalities."

West Midlands Police have named their new police puppies.

Earlier in the month the force asked for the public's help by asking them to tweet ideas for names.

The pups will be called:

Odem, Orville, Osca, Oreo, Olivia, Olympia, Oriel, Oxo and Oasis.

The Springer spaniel pups were born on December 8 in Balsall Common where the force operates its police dog breeding and training scheme.

The force asked for names beginning with the letter O.

Breed scheme manager Dave Raymond, said:

“Clearly a few Baggies fans entered as Odemwingie was tweeted in a few times…and I don’t think Opium is appropriate for a police dog!

The pups are 20 days old now; their eyes are open and they’re starting to get a bit more adventurous."

Springer spaniels are trained by West Midlands Police as specialist search dogs – hunting for weapons, drugs, cash, stolen items or explosives.
