A consultant cardiologist at the University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust has told an employment tribunal he fell victim to an NHS "witch-hunt" after revealing lies told about patient safety.

Raj Mattu, who was suspended from his post at the Trust for more than five years, claims he was unfairly dismissed in 2010.

Dr. Mattu accused his employer of endangering lives by allowing overcrowding on its wards in a 331 page statement submitted to a tribunal.

The tribunal, sitting in Birmingham, is expected to hear from five witnesses for Dr. Mattu and 23 people giving evidence on behalf of the Trust.

The hearing, which began last month, is expected to end in early August.
