The vehicles involved in the M6 crash were a silver Volkswagen Polo and three motorcycles - a red Aprilla 750cc, a blue Kawasaki 500cc and an orange Kawasaki 1000cc.
The 62-year-old man who died was the rider of the orange Kawasaki.
His passenger, a woman in her 50s was also seriously injured. Her condition is described as critical.
Staffordshire Police said a 62-year-old man has died and three people have been injured in a crash on the M6 in Staffordshire.
They said an HGV travelling on the M6 between junction 15 of the motorway and Yarnfield, near Stone, had a blowout at about 9am.
The lorry landed on the hard shoulder. As a result of the blowout, a lot of tyre debris was left on the carriageway.
Police believe traffic began to slow to avoid hitting the debris. As a result of the traffic slowing there was a collision involving three motorcycles and a car.
All four motorcyclists were taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and the 63-year-old man from Blackpool died on his way to hospital.
All three lanes reopened at around 2.45pm. Police are still investigating the incident.
