The Ecuador Football Federation has confirmed that Christian Benitez died after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest.

In a statement, the organisation has described how Benitez was suffering from severe stomach pains and was rushed to hospital.

"The Ecuadorian Football Federation extends its heartfelt note of sympathy to their families, parents, wife, children and friends of our striker Cristian Benitez."

Benitez had recently joined the club from Club America for three seasons.

The player participated for the first time with the team during yesterday's match against Qatar Sports Club in the Sheikh Jassem Cup without complaining of any health problems.

Former Birmingham City striker Christian Benitez has died aged 27.

The Ecuador international, who spent a season on loan at St Andrew's in 2009/10, had been playing for El Jaish of the Qatar Stars League.

He joined the Middle Eastern club earlier this month from Mexican side Club America, after previous spells with El Nacional, Santos Laguna and Birmingham.

He was a regular for his country and made the Ecuador squad for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, scoring 24 goals in 58 appearances.

El Jaish have released a statement confirming Benitez's tragic passing, but did not confirm the cause of death.
