Police and the fire service are investigating after two people died in a house fire in Stone in Staffordshire.

Police say fire was 'tragic accident' as couple named

An elderly couple who died in a house fire in Stone, Staffordshire, have been formally identified as 86-year-old Peter Goffe and his wife Beryl, who was 85.

The pair died yesterday evening after fire crews were called to reports of a blaze at their home in Lichfield Road.

Det Sgt Stuart Carter from Staffordshire Police said the fire, thought to have started in a bedroom, was not being treated as suspicious.

Our joint inquiries at the scene with fire investigators have now concluded and have established that this was a tragic accident. The exact cause of ignition will be subject to further investigation. The deaths are not being treated as suspicious and a full report will now be prepared for HM Coroner.

A man and a woman, aged in their 80s, were pulled from the smoke-filled property but could not be resuscitated, and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are now investigating the cause of the blaze.

Police statement on fatal Staffordshire house fire

Police are investigating the deaths of a man and a woman who died in a house fire in Stone in Staffordshire.

Emergency crews were called to a property in the town yesterday evening, but the two people could not be saved.

Staffordshire Police are now investigating, and have released this statement.

"Officers were called to a report of a house fire in Lichfield Road, Stone, by colleagues from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service at around 6.25pm on Tuesday 24 September.Officers attended to assist with closing the road while fire officers extinguished the fire.Sadly, the two occupants, an elderly man and woman, were pronounced dead at the scene.Their immediate family have been informed and are being offered support.A joint investigation to determine the cause of the fire is now underway. The road remained closed while inquiries are carried out, for some time but is now reopen."
