Bosses at the Birmingham Dogs' Home say they are 'saddened' after a blaze at their former home in New Canal Street in Digbeth.

"Staff at the current home in New Bartholomew Street are saddened to see a piece of history die and are hopeful that the burned premises, which are listed, will be restored to its former glory, emblazoned as it was with the proud sign of Birmingham Home for Lost and Starving Dogs."

Loud explosions could be heard following a fire in Birmingham this morning.

Road closures are in place on New Canal Street following the fire, thought to have been at the former Birmingham Home for Lost and Starving Dogs near Fazeley Street.

People travelling into Birmingham city centre have been advised to find alternate routes following a refuse fire on New Canal Street.
