Police react to nightclub stabbing sentence

This was a really brutal attack and the man was extremely fortunate that his injuries weren’t fatal.

Knife crime like this is completely unacceptable and this case proves that if you become involved in an offence where someone gets hurt you will face a lengthy jail sentence.

Knives have no place on our streets and we are working extremely hard to continue to drive down knife related crimes which have seen year on year reductions over the past five years.

A Coventry man has been jailed for 12 years after a stabbing in a nightclub.

The attack happened at Bar S7ven Nightclub in Coventry city centre on Monday 4 June last year after a disagreement between the 25-year-old victim and another man who was friends with Maher.

The court heard that the victim became involved in a heated argument with the man and 25-year-old Maher then stepped in and stabbed him in the stomach with the 12"-18" long blade.

After the attack he managed to run off and collapsed near to a local supermarket where he was found by paramedics with his intestines exposed. He was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries and has now made a full recovery.

A major investigation was launched and Maher later handed himself in to Willenhall Police Station and was arrested and charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm - but he denied carrying out the attack.

However, after the five-day trial he was found guilty by a jury at Birmingham Crown Court and jailed on Friday 22 November.
