A judge has condemned a Birmingham thug for a vicious attack on 63-year-old man which has left him unable to communicate with his own family.
Kyle Smith, aged 21, from Britford Close in Maypole, Birmingham, was ordered to serve three years and one month behind bars after admitting causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
The judge at Birmingham Crown Court described the attack as "a deliberate blow to a defenceless man causing ghastly consequences to the victim".
Det Cons Simon Rainbow said the attack in July had left the man with serious and ongoing injuries.

Unemployed Kyle Smith, aged 21, of Britford Close, Maypole, Birmingham, was sentenced to three years and one month behind bars after attacking a 63-year-old man in July.
Smith launched his attack on the "defenceless" man on July 2 in School Road, Yardley Wood, fracturing his skull and sparking a bleed on the brain.
He was arrested six days later after a witness appeal by police, and was charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent to injure his victim.
He was handed an extra 28 days for failing to show up to his original court date in October.
