Moazzam Begg faces Syria-related terror charges

The trial of former Guantanamo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg will be held in October, a judge ruled today.

Begg, aged 45, of Boden Road, Hall Green, Birmingham, faces charges of funding terrorism and providing terrorism training in Syria.

He appeared before the Old Bailey in London via video link from Belmarsh prison. He was told a provisional trial date would be set for October 6, with a plea hearing set for July 18.

Begg was detained at Guantanamo Bay for nearly three years before being released without charge in January 2005.

Terror suspect Moazzam Begg is appearing before a court today charged with a string of Syria-related terrorism offences.

Begg, aged 45, of Boden Road, Hall Green, Birmingham, was due to go before the Old Bailey for a preliminary hearing, after denying the charges at the start of the month.

He was arrested on Februrary 25 alongside Gerrie Tahari, 44, of Ashway, Sparkbrook, Birmingham, who was also due to appear.

Begg is charged with funding terrorism between July 14 and August 8 last year, and with providing terrorism training between October 9, 2012, and April 9 last year.

Tahari is charged with funding terrorism between December 31, 2011, and November 6 last year.

Ex-Guantanamo detainee due in court on terror charges

Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg will appear in court today, charged with Syria-related terror offences.

Begg, 45, of Boden Road, Hall Green, Birmingham, is accused of providing terrorist training and funding terrorism overseas, West Midlands Police said.

He will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court alongside a woman, Gerrie Tahari, 44, of Ashway, Sparkbrook, Birmingham, who is charged with facilitating terrorism overseas.

Both were arrested on Tuesday. Two other men arrested the same day remain in police custody.

Begg was held in the US-run military prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba for nearly three years.

Both were arrested on Tuesday.
