A 23-year-old serving soldier has appeared in court charged with murdering one of his colleagues.

Lance Corporal Richard Farrell, who is accused of killing Corporal Geoffrey McNeill last Saturday, was remanded in custody after appearing at Telford Magistrates' Court.

Farrell is a member of 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment. He spoke only to confirm his name, age, date of birth, and that he was based at Clive Barracks in Tern Hill, North Shropshire.


Police statement over soldier murder

Police investigating the murder of a soldier at a barracks in Shropshire have released the following statement after another soldier was charged with his murder.

A 23-year-old soldier was due to appear in court at Telford this morning charged with murdering a fellow soldier based at Tern Hill army barracks in Shropshire.

He was charged last night with the murder of Corporal Geoffrey William McNeill at Market Drayton, Shropshire last Saturday.

The man has been in custody at Shrewsbury police station since his arrest shortly after Corporal McNeill’s body was found in an accommodation block at the barracks at around 9am on Saturday.

He was due to appear before Telford magistrates.

The inquiry is being conducted by detectives from West Mercia Police.
