Derbyshire County Cricket club's match with Leicestershire has been postponed after a Tom Poynton was involved in a serious crash in which his father was killed.

Tom Poynton has been discharged from hospital following the accident in which his Father, Keith, died.

He is being supported by the Club Doctor and Club Physiotherapist who are treating the injuries sustained to his lower limbs in the accident.

In a statement, the Poynton family have expressed their deep gratitude for the words of tribute and support that have been extended to them in the last 24 hours.


Details of crash which killed cricketer's father

Police have released further details of a crash on Friday in which the father of Derbyshire cricketer, Tom Poynton, was killed.

Police attended a crash involving a new Ferrari Spider on Caldwell Road in Swadlincote at 8pm on Friday. Officers said the driver, Keith Poynton, died at the scene.

Hi son, 24-year-old Tom Poynton, wicket keeper for Derbyshire County Cricket Club, was a front seat passenger and sustained an injury to his leg.

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash in now underway.

Derbyshire County Cricket club's match with Leicestershire tomorrow has been postponed after one of their players was involved in a serious crash.

A statement on the club's website confirmed that Tom Poynton was involved in an incident in which his father Keith was killed.

Tom was taken to hospital by ambulance where he was admitted and retained overnight with a suspected fracture and other associated injuries.

Everyone at the Club are deeply distressed and concerned for Tom and his family."
