The funeral of a 12-year-old girl from Leicester who left hidden messages on the back of her bedroom mirror while fighting cancer is due to be held today.

Athena Orchard had been writing heartfelt messages in the months before she died, but her parents only found them afterwards.

The family and friends of Athena Orchard, who wrote hidden messages on her mirror while she battled cancer, have rallied together to help build her birds an aviary as a memorial.

Athena's family, from Leicester, told ITV News that her birds meant a lot to her, so they wanted to make sure they looked after them.

The mother of Athena Orchard, the schoolgirl who wrote hidden messages on the back of her mirror before she died from cancer, says reading her words are upsetting.

Caroline Orchard's daughter died last week, following a battle with Osteosarcoma.

Athena's parents also say they are yet to decide what to do with the mirror, but that it will have a very special place in their home.

Athena Orchard had been writing the moving and heartfelt words in the months leading up to her death, which her parents did not know about.

One line reads:

"Every day is special so make the most of it, you could get a life ending illness tomorrow so make the most of every day."

Athena was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma last December and had a tumour removed from her spine.

But the cancer spread and she died a week ago at her home in New Parks in Leicester, with her parents, six sisters and three brothers.
