Clashes at Golden Temple ahead of Midlands Sikhs march this weekend

Ahead of hundreds of Sikhs travelling to London this weekend to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Amritsar Massacre in India, there have been clashes at the Golden Temple, and several people have been injured.

Nottingham Sikhs travel to capital for Amritsar rally

Hundreds of Sikhs from Nottingham are travelling to Central London today to take part in the Remembrance March and Freedom Rally.

The rally marks the 30th anniversary of the Amritsar Massacre by the Indian army, who attacked Sri Harmander Sahib - the Golden Temple.

Ahead of the march, the Secretary Genral of Sikh Council UK, Gurmel Singh, said:

"The 1984 attack on the Sri Harmander Sahib Complex, including the destruction of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, the looting and destruction of the historical Sikh Reference Library and the killing of thousands of Skihs including women and children is one of the darkest episodes in Sikh history...

...This year is the 30th anniversary of the attack and Sikhs are particularly mindful that we still do not have the complete truth of the events of 1984. The victims and families are still to receive justice and to experience the 'glow of freedom' promised to the during partition."

Extraordinary sword fight breaks out at holy Sikh shrine

Sikhs wielding ceremonial swords and spears clashed at the holy Sikh shrine, the Golden Temple, in the northern Indian city of Amritsar today.

Fights broke out after groups disagreed over who should speak first at a prayer ceremony to mark the 30th anniversary of a controversial military raid that cleared separatist militants holed up in the temple.

Several people were injured in the scuffles.

But today, Sikhs wielding ceremonial swords and spears clashed at the holy Sikh shrine in the northern Indian city of Amritsar, and several people were injured.
