Joan and Douglas Hawkins were pupils at Sparkhill Commercial School in Birmingham when they first met, aged 14 and 15.

That was a remarkable 79 years ago.

Joan, 93, and Douglas, 94, also lived at opposite ends of the same street – Alexander Road in Edgbaston.

Now the pair – who were described as the Midlands’ most romantic couple when they toasted 70 years of marriage – are looking forward to marking their 75th anniversary with their family of two sons, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

They got married on June 17, 1939, at Edgbaston Old Church and went to Bournemouth for their honeymoon.

And their tips for a long and happy marriage?

Mutual understanding, a passion for dancing and hard work, of course.
