Nottingham's Jake Bugg nominated for Brit Award

Nottingham musician Jake Bugg has been nominated for a Brit Award in the Breakthrough Act category.

The 18-year-old from Clifton topped the UK charts in October with his self-titled album. He will discover if he has won on January 20th when the awards take place at the O2 in London.

He joins other Midlanders who have been nominated for the prestigious music awards such as Robbie Williams for his single Candy and pop-act One Direction for Best British Group, with one member Liam Payne being from Wolverhampton.

The boy-band who have taken the US by storm after they became the first UK band ever to hit the top spot on the US Billboard 200 countdown with their debut album 'Up All Night' will be performing on the night.

One Direction and Robbie Williams are among the artists shortlisted for awards at this year's Brit Awards, it has been announced.

Pop act One Direction, has been nominated for Best British Group. They are up against bands such as rock group Muse and folk band Mumford and Sons. The group will be performing when the awards take place on February 20th.

They have rapidly risen to global success after they became the first UK band ever to hit the top spot on the US Billboard 200 countdown with their debut album 'Up All Night'.

The outstanding contribution prize is being dropped this year, with organisers instead introducing a prize honouring Brits' global success, which is expected to go to Adele, although One Direction and Mumford are thought to be in the running.

Stoke-on-Trent's very own Robbie Williams has also been nominated for a Brit Award, in the category of Best Single for his release Candy.

The nominations were announced at a ceremony in London's Savoy Hotel this evening which saw the first 2012 Brit trophy - designed by artist Damien Hirst with his signature spot design - handed to critics' choice winner Tom Odell. It was handed over by last year's recipient Sande.
