Former Conservative MP Louise Mensch told ITV's This Morning that Margaret Thatcher "gave you this overwhelming sense that women could do anything".
The new Labour MP for Corby and East Northamptonshire will take his seat in the House of Commons later today.
Andy Sawford won Thursday's by-election, which was triggered by the departure of Conservative Louise Mensch who decided to emigrate to American to spend more time with her family.
He's told ITV News he'll work "incredibly hard" to repay the trust of the people who voted for him.
The Labour party has won the Corby by-election beating the Conservatives who took the seat from them at the 2010 General Election.
The new Labour MP is Andy Sawford who won with a majority of 7,791 is the son of the former Kettering MP Phil Sawford.
He overturned a Conservative majority of 1,951.

In a letter to the Prime Minister she expressed her deep regret at having to resign but explained that her priority is to be there for her family, who have decided to move to New York.
She married Peter Mensch a year ago, who is the manager of rock band Metallica. She has three children.
The list of candidates standing in the by-election for the Corby and East Northamptonshire has been released.
The by-election came about after Louise Mensch handed in her resignation for family reasons.
Fourteen candidates are in the running and the polling day is Thursday 15 November.

A 'Twitter war' was sparked after a Labour MP tweeted referring to an interview given by former Midlands MP Louise Mensch's husband in which he claimed his wife resigned from her Corby post because of fear of defeat at the next election.
Louise Mensch quickly corrected her husband stating he reason for stepping down was to spend more time with her family in New York.
The MP for Grimsby Austin Mitchell sent a public reply:
Shut up Menschkin.A good wife doesn't disagree with her master in public and a good little girl doesn't lie about why she quit politics
Mrs Mensch was quick to retweet the message and call for an apology from party leader Ed Milliband and deputy Harriet Harman.
She also tweeted saying that a private company would not tolerate such a comment.

Mr Mitchell later defended his tweet by saying he was being ironic.
Former Midlands MP Louise Mensch said she had "no fear" of defeat at the next general election after her husband told The Sunday Times that was the motivation for her resigning as a Tory MP.

The Prime Minister David Cameron will be visiting Northamptonshire today, in the run up to the by-election for the Corby and East Northamptonshire seat.
It follows Tory MP Louise Mensch's resignation over the summer. The seat is a target for Labour.
