Labour made huge gains in key election battle grounds in the Midlands. 17 local councils were up for grabs - only three of those were held by Labour. But the party now controls ten including Birmingham, Dudley and Derby.

Labour has celebrated a 'landslide victory' in Birmingham today, ousting the Tory-Lib Dem coalition which has ruled the city since 2004.
