Tributes have been paid to Lord Maples, the former MP for Stratford Upon Avon, who has died from cancer at the age of 69.
A former deputy chairman of the Conservative Party, he served as Shadow Health Secretary, Shadow Defence Secretary and then Shadow Foreign Secretary under William Hague.
He was widely rumoured to have been one of the 'plotters' against Iain Duncan Smith when he became Tory leader but he always denied this was the case.
John Maples was first elected as an MP back in 1983 for the London seat of Lewisham West. He served there until 1992.
A one time barrister and businessman he had served under John Major as Economic Secretary to the Treasury.
He became MP for the Midlands seat of Stratford Upon Avon in 1997 and was re-elected in 2001 and 2005.
He stood down in 2010 and entered the House of Lords.
He was married with two children.
"He was a real gentleman - decent and incredibly kind.
"He was always there when I needed advice. He has gone to a better place".
