A Police officer has been praised for his actions when he single-handedly broke up a fight between a group of rival football fans at a West Bromwich pub.

PC Andrew Francis was the only officer present at the Wagon and Horses on Halfords Lane in April when the fight started between fans of West Bromwich Albion and QPR.

As glasses and bottles were thrown the officer jumped in and arrested nine people before his colleagues arrived.

Six of those people were sentenced yesterday (3 December) at Birmingham Crown Court. Each person received community orders and unpaid work.

Following the hearing PC Francis said: “It was a scary experience and one which law-abiding fans should not have to put up with."
