Thousands of people have been taking to the roads, railways and the air for what was expected to be the busiest day of the Christmas holiday getaway.
There were predicted to be up to 350,000 vehicles per hour on the Midlands' road network.
It's likely to stay busy all weekend, and for those setting off tomorrow there could be some treacherous weather conditions as well. Peter Bearne reports.
