What is Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome?

A family from Redditch have pledged to install defibrillators in the town's schools following the sudden loss of their daughter, Charlotte Prentice, in 2010.

Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS):

  • Caused by irregularities in the heart beat which can cause sudden death in apparently healthy young people.
  • Warning signs include a family history of unexpected deaths under the age of 40, fainting or seizures during exercise or excitement, chest pain or shortness of breath during exercise.
  • The condition is often passed down from parent to child and up to 500 young people die every year.
