New figures show the number of people unemployed in the West Midlands went up between October and December 2012.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) says 238,000 people remain out of work in the region - three thousand more than between July and September last year.
Nationally, unemployment fell by 14,000 to 2.5 million.
The figures come as it emerged 1,700 people applied for 8 jobs at one coffee shop in the East Midlands, giving some indication about how tough the job market remains.
