Defence barrister delivers closing speech
In his closing speech, Mick Philpott's defence barrister Anthony Orchard QC said he would attempt to show the prosecution's case is "trial by smear and scandal."
He said Mr. Philpott raises emotion, can be arrogant and rude and his TV appearance "made him hated".
He was referring to appearances on news programmes and The Jeremy Kyle Show in 2006. Regarding the petrol evidence in the case, he said that it did not show for certain that the Total brand of petrol found on Mr. Philpott's clothing was the same as that used to start the fire in the hallway.
"The petrol evidence is confusing and does not support the conclusion that these defendants are guilty" he said.
