Police name man who died swimming in Shropshire river

A man who died after getting into difficulties in a river on the Shropshire-North Wales border has been named Anthony James Lawrence of Ty Maen, Lower Brook Street, Oswestry.

The 21 year-old was airlifted to the Royal ShrewsburyHospital after emergency services pulled him from the water at an isolated location close to the confluence of the Rivers Dee and Ceiriog, near Chirk, shortly before 7pm on Tuesday.

He was pronounced dead later on Tuesday evening.

Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances.

A post mortem is due to be held today and an inquest will be opened over the next few days.

Sadly, there have been a number of recent tragedies in Shropshire and neighbouring counties where people have got into difficulties after entering rivers or quarry pools.

We are urging people not to be tempted.

These types of water can be highly dangerous with strong currents, muscle cramping can be brought on by the cold water and there is often weed or hidden obstacles beneath the surface.
