The Midlands will benefit from a £600 million transformation of Birmingham New Street as part of plans by Network Rail which begin today to improve rail services across the country.
The redevelopment aims to transform New Street in to one of Britain's flagship stations.
Birmingham New Street will see a new concourse which will be three and a half times bigger than at present and a large atrium will filter natural light throughout the station.
The station will also have links to the new Grand Central shopping centre which will provide over 40 new shops, including John Lewis, and 20 restaurants and cafes.
The approach to and from New Street will also be resignalled to provide a more reliable and efficient railway meaning fewer delays.
