A car spotted swerving down the southbound carriageway of the M5 was stopped by a quick-thinking lorry driver.
He moved in front of the car, forcing it to stop, avoiding what emergency services have described as "possibly a fatal collision".
West Midlands Ambulance say it turned out that the 60-year-old car driver had a "medical episode at the wheel". He was treated at the scene and taken to Sandwell Hospital.
