St Lawrence first aiders get national success

Five young first aiders from Jersey have achieved national success for their skills.

The team from St Lawrence Primary School took part in the St John Ambulance National Schools Competition and came away with first prize.

It is the first time a Jersey school has won.

Esther says winning was a surprise.

Teams of pupils from across the country went head to head, showcasing their team work, communication and first aid skills in challenging emergency scenarios with 'live' casualties.

The Jersey team was made up of St Lawrence pupils Olivia Woodward, Esther Wilderspin and Cerys Banks, along with Caitlin Hedgecock and Claire Le Fondre who have moved up to secondary school.

Olivia says she enjoyed the competition.

I think it's really important to empower children with those skills that they need so they can help anyone, even if it's something little like a cut finger or reassuring someone that's been in a car accident, or you know, hurt their leg on a bike. It's so important that somebody nearby knows what to do and how to help and for them at this age to know is just brilliant.
