Five parishes have been selected to represent the Channel Islands for the Royal Horticultural Society's Britain in Bloom Finals.

St Martin, St Peter Port and St Pierre du Bois in Guernsey, and St Brelade and St Saviour in Jersey, have been recognised for their 'outstanding commitment to environmental responsibility, community participation and gardening achievement'.

70 UK towns and cities are being judged for the awards, which this year include an award for overcoming adversity, for those that have been battling the floods.

It is important that Jersey has the opportunity to showcase the very diverse environment that makes our island so special whilst supporting the strong ethos behind this event of vibrant community involvement and horticultural excellence.

– Steve Pallett, Assistant Minister of Economic Development in Jersey

Community spirit and 'pride of place' are important components of island life and the Britain in Bloom campaign has proved the perfect focus for community members to work together.

– Peter Falla, Floral Guernsey Foundation
